Hot balls of fire - it's a volcano!
On the southern tip of the Steamspur mountains lies Mount Maelstrom. This region is named after the volcano in the southern part. This volcano actually erupted 250 years ago and caused the region, which was once covered in snow, to melt and become the area we know today.
The southern Shiverpeaks were once the home of the capital of the Dwarves, Droknar's Forge. This town was named after one of the Dwarven kings of old, and was never conquered by an enemy nation.
Interestingly, it was also occupied by other warring factions: the Avicara Tengu, White Mantle, Shining Blade, and the Mursaat.
Of these, we have only know the Tengu, White Mantle and the Shining Blade to still exist, as the Mursaat are supposed to have been annihilated.
At the time many different kinds of wildlife, such as Tundra Giants, Frost Wurms, Ice Imps, Blessed Griffons, and Mountain Trolls roamed the snowy tundra. These vanished after the eruption changed the main environment, making it inhospitable for most ice creatures.
